Denver Drops First Road Game at Wyoming, 82-41

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Denver women's basketball team didn't have enough to overcome a hot start by the Wyoming Cowgirls on Friday night in front of 4,081 fans at the Arena Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo., falling 82-41. Wyoming (2-0) jumped out to an early 18-4 lead at the 14:40 mark of the first half. The Cowgirls pressure defense resulted in a tough shooting night for Denver (0-2), who shot 5-for-31 from the field in the first half. Wyoming was up 48-17 at halftime and never looked back.

Sophomore forward Jesse Spittel (Yorba Linda, Calif.) led the Pioneers with 10 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Kaila Burroughs (St. Cloud, Minn.), in her collegiate debut, chipped in nine points off the bench.



Senior guard Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) took over sole possession of 22nd place on Denver's all-time scoring list, passing Dianne Mackley when she drained a pull-up jumper at the 18:46 mark of the first half. Van Riper-Rose finished with four points in the game and now has 987 points in her career.



Wyoming senior Kayla Woodward (Sheridan, Wyo.) put up a double-double with a game high 18 points and 12 rebound s for the Cowgirls. Junior Marquelle Dent (Denver, Colo.) was the catalyst for the Cowgirls transition offense and dished out seven assists to go along with 11 points and seven rebounds. Center Kaylie Radar (Thornton, Colo.) played well in the low post, tallying 11 points.



Denver held a 4-2 advantage in the first 1:14 of the game, but when cold from the field after that, missing their next 10 field goal attempts. The Pioneers shot 16 percent (5-31) from the field in the first half, including 1-of-9 from three-point range.



Denver's next game is at home at Magness Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 25 against Colorado. The game will be televised on ROOT Sports and an audio-only broadcast can be heard on Pioneer Vision.
