DENVER - The University of Denver women's basketball team lost to the Belmont Bruins 72-43 on Saturday afternoon at Magness Arena. Belmont (1-5) hit the glass hard and forced Denver (0-5) into 19 turnovers to take the third game of the Denver Thanksgiving Classic. The Bruins held a 60-36 rebounding advantage over the Pioneers.

In fitting fashion Denver senior guard Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) surpassed 1,000 career points when she drained a three-pointer at the 13:29 mark of the second half. Van Riper-Rose is currently in 22nd place on Denver's all-time scoring list with 1,003 career points. She needs 24 more points to pass Tasha Jones for 21st place on the scoring list.

Sophomore Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) led the Pioneers in scoring with 10 points, her second straight game scoring in double figures off the bench. Jordan Johnston (Waterloo, Iowa) put in five points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman Avery Queen (Boerne, Texas) played 28 minutes, the most of her career, and contributed six points and five rebounds.

The Pioneers took the lead when Johnston scored the first basket of the game to make it 2-0, but then the Bruins went on a 12-0 run over the next 4:31 to take control of the first half. Denver cut Belmont's lead to three, 19-16, when Poss nailed a three-pointer with 9:21 remaining, but Belmont used a 10-2 run to regain control and carried a 33-21 lead into halftime. Belmont powered their way to 16 points in the paint which made the difference in the first half. In the second half Belmont increased their lead to 53-29 on a Luffman-Hartsfield three-pointer at the 9:38 mark and maintained the lead for the rest of the contest.

Both teams struggled shooting the ball, Denver shot 29% (15-52) from the field, while Belmont shot 34% (26-76). The difference being the rebounding advantage, Belmont collected 24 offensive rebounds which lead to a 23-3 advantage for Belmont in second-chance points.

Belmont's Frankie Joubran and Jordyn Luffman-Hartsfield both recorded double-doubles. Luffman-Hartsfield led the way in the scoring column with 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Joubran dominated the boards with 14 rebounds and tallied 13 points.

The Pioneers next three games are at home, starting Wednesday December 3 when Denver welcomes Cal State Fullerton to Magness Arena at 7 p.m.
