DENVER - The Pioneers hit their third consecutive match sweep on Saturday afternoon against the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley (25-15, 25-18, 25-23). This particular game was a preparation match for both teams which have recently made it into the NCAA tournament. With this success, Denver moves on 27-6 (13-3 in Summit) on the season while UNCO falls 22-10 (12-4 in Big Sky).
Though Northern Colorado and Denver kept a close range within overall kills throughout the full match, Denver soared in hitting percentage with .420 to UNCO's .220, as well as blocks with seven to UNCO's one.
"We got out of this match exactly what we needed: a good competitive atmosphere on the road to prepare us for the first round of the NCAA tournament," Coach Jesse Mahoney stated. "We had great offensive numbers, especially in sets one and two, and played solid defense throughout the match. We are playing well and peaking at the right time."
Sophomore Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) led her team with 20 kills at a .442 hitting rate. Other astounding contributions were provided by sophomore Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.) with 10 kills at a .556 rate and Erica Denney with five at a .444 rate.
