DU Men's Tennis Sweeps DePaul 7-0 at Home

DENVER The No. 52 ranked University of Denver men’s tennis team claimed six singles wins and two doubles victories as it easily beat DePaul 7-0 at the Colorado Athletic Club-Monaco in Denver on Sunday.

“I just think the energy was fantastic,” head coach Danny Westerman said. “The guys really lifted each other from every doubles match, from every singles match and they were coming together as a team. So I think we’re making the right strides in playing as a team. Today was a nice win.”

Denver is 6-2 overall following the win, while DePaul drops to 1-5.

In doubles, the Pioneers claimed wins in two matches. The No. 32 ranked duo of Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) and Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal) netted the first win in the No. 1 spot, defeating Filip Dzanko and David Vieyra 6-1. Clinching the doubles point for DU was the No. 2 team of Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada) and Alex Gasson (Alton, U.K.) who beat Sten Leusink and Kyle Johnson 6-4. Tandem Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) and Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) were winning 5-2 in the No. 3 spot against Adam Reinhart and Paul John when play finished.

Posting the first singles wins of the day were Gasson who was victorious over Sten Leusink 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot and Rocha who defeated David Vieyra 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot. No. 6 freshman Eric Marbach (Naperville, Ill.) posted the match-cinching point, beating Adam Reinhart 6-3, 6-3.

The final singles wins of the day went to Clinkenbeard, Craig and James. Clinkenbeard came out on top versus Kyle Johnson 6-5, 6-3, Craig won 6-5 (7-2), 6-4 against Filip Dzanko and James defeated Joshua Schramm 0-6, 6-5, 10-8.

Denver men’s tennis next competes on Friday, Feb. 21 when it faces Marquette at 5 p.m., MT in Milwaukee, Wis.
