Skiing Pioneers Arrive in Sochi for 2014 Winter Olympics

DENVER – University of Denver junior Trevor Philp (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Sebastian Brigovic (Rijeka, Croatia), as well as former Pioneer Leif Kristian Haugen (Lommendalen, Norway) are set to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia this week. All three athletes are slated to race giant slalom on Feb. 19 at 12 a.m. MT, followed by slalom on Feb. 22 at 5:45 a.m. MT.

Philp is making his first appearance in the Olympics after placing 27th and 30th in the World Cup slalom held in Val d’Isere, France; and Beaver Creek, Colo. Philp has raced in each of Denver’s meets this season, winning four of five races. Philp has clinched the top seed in the NCAA Championship for GS.

Brigovic will make his first Olympic appearance in Sochi after being a standout freshman for the Pioneers in college races. Brigovic earned a third-place finish in his second collegiate race at the Pat Miller Invitational held in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 5. Since his first podium finish, Brigovic has placed second in three-consecutive collegiate races, including two just behind Philp.

Former Pioneer Haugen will make his second Olympic appearance. While a member of the Pioneers, Haugen was named to the Norwegian Olympic ski team for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Haugen placed 28th in GS at the Vancouver Olympics. As a Pioneer, Haugen earned the NCAA individual title for GS in 2010, helping DU win its third-straight NCAA Championship. Additionally, Haugen placed second in GS and third in slalom at the NCAA Championships as a member of the 2009 championship winning team.

In addition to the Pioneers in Sochi, Mikaela Shiffrin, the younger sister of sophomore Taylor Shiffrin (Avon, Colo.), finished fifth in her Olympic debut in GS while representing the United States. Mikaela is set to race in slalom on Feb. 21 at 5:45 a.m. MT.
