MILWAUKEE– The No. 54 ranked University of Denver men’s tennis team won the doubles point and claimed two singles wins, but could not hold onto a win as they were defeated 4-3 by Marquette in Milwaukee on Friday.

“Last night was a very hard fought exciting college tennis match,” head coach Danny Westerman said. “It could not have been any closer and we have to give Marquette a great deal of credit. They really stepped up in critical moments in tiebreakers at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and saving two dual match points at No. 1. I know our guys will learn from this tough loss and we will continue to get better.”

Denver is 6-3 overall following the loss, while Marquette improves to 6-3.

The Pioneers got off to a strong start, winning the doubles point. Playing in the No. 2 spot, Alex Gasson (Alton, U.K.) and Yannik James (St. Georges, Granada) beat Logon Collins and Gleb Sklyr 8-4. Next, the duo of Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) and Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) clinched the doubles point for Denver, defeating Nick Dykema and Cameron Tehrani 8-4 in the No. 3 spot.

In singles, Clinkenbeard and Eric Marbach (Naperville, Ill.) came away with victories. Playing in the No. 4 spot, Clinkenbeard posted a hard fought 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Tehrani. Then Marbach beat Mackenzie Stearns 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot.

Denver men’s tennis next competes on Sunday, Feb. 23 when it faces the No. 67 University of Wisconsin at 1 p.m., MT in Madison, Wis.
