SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The No. 73 ranked University of Denver men’s tennis team fell to No. 40 Purdue 4-0 in its second match at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic on Friday.
"I was hoping we would recover today after a competitive match versus Harvard yesterday better than we did,” head men’s tennis coach Danny Westerman said. “Purdue took it to us and we did not respond very well. We need to remember today's match and bounce back much better tomorrow."
Denver is 6-7 overall following the loss, while Purdue improves to 7-3.
The DU tandem of Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) and Alex Gasson (Alton, U.K.) came away with a victory in the No. 1 doubles spot. Craig and Gasson defeated Diego Acosta and Aaron Dujovne 8-6. But Denver could not hold on to the doubles point, falling to Purdue in the No. 2 and 3 spots.
Purdue swept the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots in singles to clinch the match. Craig, Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal) and Aidan Talcott (Seacliff, N.Y.) were all midway through their second sets when play was called.
Denver men’s tennis will play again on Saturday in San Diego, Calif. at 11 a.m., MT. The Pioneers will face the loser of the San Diego State versus No. 56 Princeton match.
