DU Men's Tennis Drops Match Against Drake

DES MOINES, IOWA - The University of Denver men’s tennis team fell to No. 32 Drake 5-2 on Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa.

"I am very proud of the effort and the level we played at today,” head men’s tennis coach Danny Westerman said. “We lost to a very good Drake team today and played our hearts out. We are getting better and have yet to hit our ceiling which is exciting."

Denver falls to 7-10 overall following the loss, while Drake improves to 17-5 overall.

The Pioneers started off strong, battling to claim the doubles point. The No. 42 ranked Denver duo of Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) and Alex Gasson (Alton, U.K.) first defeated No. 48 ranked Robin Goodman and Ben Lott 8-6 in the No. 1 spot. Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) and Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal) clinched the point, beating Ben Mullis and Alen Salibasic 8-7 (7-5).

In singles, Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) netted the lone win of the day. The senior posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Matt Frost in the No. 4 spot. Biasion battled through three sets with Ravi Patel in the No. 5 spot, but could not come away with a win.

Denver men’s tennis next hosts South Dakota State at 12 p.m., MT, at Gates Tennis Center on Friday.
