Torres Wins at the International Grand Prix

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico – Sophomore Andrew Torres (Arvada, Colo.) of the University of Denver swimming and diving team started his summer early by taking first in the 200 butterfly during the opening day of the International Grand Prix, held at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus' Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez Natatorium, on Friday.

The Ralston Valley High School alumnus won the event in 2:01.16 to earn a FINA “B” standard and also finished eighth in the 100 free with a time of 54.16.

Torres is vying to qualify for future national team opportunities with Puerto Rico this summer. This will lead up to the 22nd Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Veracruz, Mexico on Nov. 14-30, and possibly the 2015 Pan American Games, 2015 World Championships and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

“Andrew’s swim today was a strong qualifying time for the CAC Games, and he is the No. 1-ranked Puerto Rican athlete in the 200 fly currently,” DU head coach Brian Schrader said.

Torres will also compete in the 50 and 100 fly, the 50, 200 and 400 free and the 200 IM over the course of Saturday and Sunday.
