DENVER - DU volleyball head coach Jesse Mahoney has announced that Penn State transfer Erica Denney (Aurora, Colo.) will play for the Crimson and Gold in 2014. Denney has attended Pennsylvania State University the last four years, sitting out her freshman and junior seasons due to injury.

Denney was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Grandview High School in Aurora, guiding her team to an undefeated record (31-0) and a Colorado State Championship in 2007. While at Grandview, she won a multitude of awards, including a two-time State Championship All-Tournament Team selection, a four-time All-Conference (Centennial League) selection and a three-time All-State honoree. Denney also won a gold medal at the 2008 NORCECA Championships and participated in the 2009 World Championships in Thailand as a member of the Youth National Team.

She will play the sole middle hitter position this season, and Mahoney has high hopes for her performance.

"We are thrilled to have Erica join our program," Mahoney said. "She is a quality person and an intense competitor who has played volleyball at the highest levels. She has battled injuries throughout her career at Penn State, but she is healthy now and excited to get back on the court. We are looking forward to seeing what her experience will bring to the mix as we start the pre-season."

Denney participated in the team's first practice on Aug. 9, and looks to play in DU's first game on Aug. 29 against Jackson State. She will also join the team from Aug. 15-20, as they visit the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
