Aug. 11, 2014 DENVER - Earlier this month Denver women's golfer Mariell Bruun (Larvik, Norway) won the National Championship in her native country, a dominating 8-stroke win that also earned her the King's Trophy, the top honor for an athlete in Norway.
The honors keep coming for Bruun as she has been selected to represent Norway, along with former Pioneers golfer Tonje Daffinrud, at the World Amateur in Karuizawa, Japan later this month. Also named to the Norwegian team was Nicoline Skaug from East Carolina University. Each participating country will have two to three golfers on the team.
"I am really excited to play in the world championship in Japan," Bruun said. "I have never played in such a championship before so that in itself is an experience for me."
Pioneers head women's coach Lindsay Kuhle was excited for the opportunity for Bruun and Daffinrud.
"It is such an honor to represent your nation at the World Women's Amateur Championship and something that is well deserved for both Tonje and Mariell. I wish them both the best of luck and know that they will enjoy the experience and give their best effort. This is something that they both have talked about and has been a goal of theirs that past two years."
The Japan golf association's managing director and chairman of international affairs Taizo Kawata said, "It is our first chance to host the Espirito Santo trophy competition and we consider it a special privilege to have the world come to Japan for these championships."
The tournament will be played over four days at the Prince Hotel Resort's Iriyama and Oshitate courses. Two out of three scores will be counted every day as the participants seek to win the 26th Espirito Santo Trophy.
"I am quite sure I will learn many new things during the week in Japan and bring a lot of new experience with me that will help me later," Bruun said. "To be a part of this team means so much to me. I'm looking forward to the trip already!"
