DENVER - The Pioneers launched their appearance in the Denver Invitational with a tight win against the Dons (now at a 5-5 non-conference record) on Friday night in the Hamilton Gymnasium.
Led by a combined 44 kills from sophomores Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.) and Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Tex.), the University of Denver volleyball team vanquished San Francisco in five hard-played sets (25-20, 30-28, 24-26, 22-25, 12-15).
Senior Bailey Karst (Aurora, Colo.) outplayed the Dons in assists by herself, registering 63 of Denver's 71 total assists, compared to San Francisco's combined 59 assists. Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) had 21 digs and two of the three total service aces for Denver.
"We gutted it out. Every set was competitive, it was fun to coach, and win or lose, I would have been happy with this match because we took a step forward tonight," head coach Jesse Mahoney commented on the match.
This first victory of the tournament improves Denver's record to 9-3 on the season.
The Pioneers will continue the Denver Invitational in Hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday, September 20 where they will face Nevada and the University of Texas at El Paso. Fans can follow these matches live on Pioneer Vision or via Live Stats.
