VOLL v Oral Roberts (29 SEP 14) - Post Game
DENVER - The University of Denver volleyball team completed its second sweep to start Summit League play, defeating Oral Roberts in straights on Monday night at Hamilton Gymnasium.
"I thought we played very well across the board," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "We know Oral Roberts is a better team than that, they've been on the road last couple of days. We jumped on them early, and kept a high level of play throughout the entire match. I thought that Bailey did a great job of spreading the ball around, and we passed very well.
Denver was led in kills by a trio of sophomores as Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.), Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) and Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.) finished with 11, 10 and seven kills, respectively. Senior setter Bailey Karst (Aurora, Colo.) finished the match with 30 assists, while senior libero Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) had a match-high 12 digs.
Okoye had five kills in six total attacks in the first set to lead the Pioneers (13-3, 2-0 Summit League) attack to a 25-17 win in the opening stanza. Oral Roberts (7-9, 1-2) never led in the first set, and the score was tied just twice. Denver also got five of its 25 points on blocks in the first set, led by three block assists from redshirt senior Erica Denney (Aurora, Colo.).
Denver led the entire second set and led by as many as 13, twice (23-10, 25-12), and went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead. Basey led the way in the second set, recording six kills without an error on seven total attacks. The Pioneers earned side outs on 91% (11-12) of its opportunities in the second set.
Oral Roberts took its first lead of the match at 3-2 in the third set. Denver regained the lead for good at 14-13 as a Corrujedo kill provided the last lead change of the match. The Pioneers finished the match on a 14-0 run to win the final set 25-13.
With the win, the Pioneers moved to 13-3 on the season, the program's best start since Denver began the 2008 campaign with a 15-2 mark. The three-set win was Denver's seventh sweep of the season.
The Pioneers finished with just five hitting errors, and hit at a .486 clip on Monday night.
Denver returns to the road on Friday when the Pioneers head to Brookings, S.D., to take on South Dakota State. First serve is set for 6 p.m. MT. The Pioneers return home Sunday when they host Omaha at 12 p.m. MT in Hamilton Gymnasium.
