DENVER - The Pioneers took on the Sam Houston State Bearkats in their first game of the 2014 Pioneer Classic, following the match between the University of Kansas and Bradley where the Jayhawks won 3-0 over the Braves.

The Pioneers were victorious in their first set with a 25-21 score over Sam Houston State. Throughout the set, Denver posted an overall .313 kill percentage, 14 assists and 2 blocks.

Denver went on to trump the Bearkats 25-16 in the second set.

The Pioneers finished the third set by sweeping their competition 25-16. This marks their fourth win of the season, holding a 4-0 record. Denver out-blocked Sam Houston State eleven to one and had a kill percentage of .326 to Sam Houston's .058.

Of their victorious opening game of the Pioneer Classic, head coach Jesse Mahoney commented, "It felt great to get our first win at home, and I think we had a lot of good energy on the court. I was happy to get some younger players in the game as well. My biggest take away is that we finished those last sets strong and will continue to work our hardest throughout the tournament."

The Pioneer Classic continues tomorrow, Saturday, September 6th at 12:00 PM against Bradley. Their second match will be against Kansas at 7:30 PM.
