Denver- After strong performances in the victory over 24th ranked Boise State on January 8th, Samantha Corea (Vancouver, B.C.) and Larissa Grammer (Olathe, Colo.) have been named the Swimmer and Diver of the Week for the Summit League.
This is Grammer's first ever Diver of the Week award since arriving at Denver. The sophomore posted her personal best in the 3m dive this past meet. Her 5th place finish helped the Pioneers with their win in the dual meet. Grammer's personal best score also ranks as a top 10 score posted in the Summit League this year.
Diving Coach Channing Kimball was elated for Grammer saying "I am so excited to have Larissa be awarded this recognition this week. Larissa had a very strong meet against Boise State - improving her personal best 3m score by over 19 points. She has an incredible way of getting into her 'zone' and staying focused on what she needs to do to have a successful dive each round. At one point I looked over at her between rounds and saw her just dancing away while she listened to music. She works hard and has a lot of fun while doing it. I know she has a lot more success ahead."
This is the third Swimmer of the Week award this season for Corea now bringing her total to five in her career. Corea was part of two record setting performances this past meet. First, in the 200 medley relay Corea and her teammates set a mark of 1:43.29. That time is a new pool record for Denver. Second record was in the 100 yard butterfly. Corea won the heat by .05 seconds. Her time is now a pool record for El Pomar Natatorium. Corea also took second in the 200 yard backstroke.
"We had a great team effort to beat Boise State, and Sam really stepped up to lead our team, and get it done. She started our winning medley relay off with a great fly leg, and then had a solid win in the 100 back, swam a strong race in the 200 back, and her 100 fly was outstanding. Her performance in that particular event was a critical point swing for us during the meet. There aren't many women that swim faster during the season nationally, and it was awesome to see on senior night" said swim Coach Brian Schrader.
Pioneers next meet is in Laramie, Wyoming where the Swim and Dive will take on the Cowboys of Wyoming on Janurary 17th.
