DENVER - The Denver Pioneers swept Omaha (25-21, 29-27, 25-14) Sunday in Hamilton Gymnasium. Denver holds the best league record at 6-1 and best overall record at 18-4 in the Summit League.
"Omaha is a very good team they are probably one of the toughest defensive teams we've played all season," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "Definitely made us work to sideout. It was an interesting match for us because Piyusha Boteju (Euless, Texas) couldn't play because of injuries, so we had a five-one with Monique Domme (Colorado Springs, Colo.). I thought the players adjusted really well. Certainly by the third set we were playing at a really high rate. We're happy to get the win, and we've got another good team coming up on Friday so it's back to work."
As the only setter in the match for Denver, Domme recorded 31 assists, just three shy of her single-match career high, as well as her first career block. Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) led the Pioneers with seven kills each, while Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.) had the best hitting performance of the team at .400 with five kills.
Both teams struggled to begin the match; Denver hit .109 while Omaha hit .106 in the first set. After coming out to a 2-0 lead, the Pioneers fought through seven ties before claiming a permanent lead at 14-13. Cassie Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the Pioneers with four kills and a solo block in the first set. Corrujedo recorded three kills and notched eight digs in the set.
The second set was once again evenly matched as Denver and Omaha challenged each other through 12 ties and three lead changes. The set went to extra points after a back-row attack from the Mavericks tied the score at 25. The Pioneers claimed the set 29-27 following a service ace from Corrujedo. Schmid led DU with five kills without an error as well as a career-high two service aces in the set.
Denver dominated the final set, reaching 20 points before the Mavericks tallied double-digits and hitting .321 in the set while holding Omaha to a .065 hitting percentage. Several Pioneers helped out in the final set with kills from eight different players. Baird, Corrujedo, Becca Latham (Austin Texas) and Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) each had two kills in the final set, with Basey tallying two kills on two attempts.
Denver will face Oral Roberts (10-9, 4-2 Summit) at home Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m. MT before the Pioneers will travel for three straight away games.
