ELMHURST, Ill. -University of Denver volleyball senior Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and men's soccer redshirt-junior Reagan Dunk(Dallas, Texas) swept the Summit League Athletes of the Month for August/September, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Schmid earned her first Female Athlete of the Month award after leading the NCAA with 90 blocks through September 29. With two Defensive Player of the Week awards already this season, Schmid recorded a 2015 single-match League-high 10 blocks against San Diego State on Aug. 29 and at IUPUI on Sept. 26. The middle blocker has also recorded nine blocks on three occasions.
In addition to leading the Denver blockers, who rank first among NCAA DI programs with 210.0 total blocks, Schmid is 14th in the nation and first in the Summit League with a .431 hitting percentage on the season. In August and September, Schmid hit at least .400 in 10 of the Pioneers' 18 matches, including a career-high .714 (5 kills - 0 errors - 7 attempts) in the Denver Invitational against UIC on Sept. 18.
The Pioneers ended September at 14-4 and 2-1 in the Summit League, with both Summit League wins in straight sets. Denver volleyball continues Summit League play at Western Illinois Friday at 6 p.m. MT before returning home vs. Omaha Sunday, October 11 at 2 p.m. MT.
Dunk won his first Summit League Male Athlete of the Month as a member of the ninth-ranked and unbeaten Pioneers (9-0-2). He leads Denver in assists with six from his right back position. The Dallas, Texas, native's assist tally is the fifth-highest total in the country. DU's right back was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28 after assisting both goals in Denver's 2-0 win at Western Illinois.
Dunk is also the most experienced player on a Denver backline that has the nation's 15th-best goals against average through 11 matches this season. In August and September, Dunk helped the Pioneers to five clean sheets, allowing only 20 shots on goal in the process.
Denver ended the month ranked eighth in the NSCAA coaches poll and has wins over No. 17 South Florida and at Saint Louis, which was receiving votes, along with a draw against No. 19 UC Santa Barbara.
