DU Names Tom Hogan Volleyball Head Coach

Dec. 17, 2015

Katelin Batten Promoted to First Assistant

DENVER - Denver's associate head coach Tom Hogan has been promoted to volleyball head coach, Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations Peg Bradley-Doppes announced Thursday.

Hogan becomes the seventh head coach in DU volleyball history since the program's inception in 1983. Hogan has spent the past four seasons at the University of Denver as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator and most recently as the associate head coach for the 2015 season, helping the team to the program's first two Summit League Championships and its first two bids to the NCAA Tournament in program history in 2014 and 2015.

"We are thrilled that Tom has accepted the head coaching position," Bradley-Doppes said. "He is a wonderful technician and teacher of the game, with a reputation for success at the national and international levels. As the former associate head coach, Tom already knows our values at the University of Denver, and we are excited for him to continue the success of the volleyball program."

Hogan replaces four-year head coach Jesse Mahoney. Mahoney produced four winning records at Denver, including back-to-back 27-win seasons in 2014 and 2015. Mahoney will return to his alma mater, the University of Colorado, as the volleyball head coach in 2016.

In Hogan's time organizing the offense, Denver has finished as high as 19th in the country for team hitting percentage, recording .245 (44th) in 2012, .266 (20th) in 2013, .266 (19th) in 2014 and .257 (33rd) in 2015, all top-5 single-season attack percentage records in Denver's history.

Hogan also successfully led setters Monique Domme (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Piyusha Boteju (Euless, Texas) in a 6-2 formation. The Pioneers dished out 1,556 assists in 2015, ranking 41st among DI teams and Denver's second top-10 single-season performance in as many years.

"I would like to thank Chancellor Chopp, Peg and Ron for this exciting opportunity and for the honor of leading the Pioneers as we look to the future," Hogan said. "Since joining the DU family in 2012, the administration, our team and all of our future players have become like family to me. It is truly a special place, and it has been incredible to be a part of the program's growth and success over the past few years. I look forward to continuing to build off of that success and taking the Denver program to the next level. I would also like to wish Jesse the best of luck in his future position up the road. Not only has he been a great coach to work with over the past four years, but he has become a close friend. I'm proud and honored to be a Pioneer, and I look forward to beginning the next chapter of DU volleyball alongside our passionate and talented players and staff."

The Pioneers' new head coach brings a wealth of coaching experience, including plenty from the international stage.

Hogan led the 2015 U.S. Women's Junior National Team to a Gold Medal finish at the World Global Challenge defeating Italy in five sets. Hogan also led the 2014 U.S. Women's Junior National Team to a Gold Medal at the NORCECA Women's U-20 Continental Championship. Hogan served as head coach of the U.S. Girls' Select A1 and A2 Volleyball Programs in 2011. Hogan's USA Select National Team earned a Silver Medal at the 2013 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships and a Bronze Medal in 2012.

Before joining the DU staff with Mahoney in 2012, Hogan spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Colorado. Prior to his coaching stint with the Buffs, Hogan was a member of the USA Women's Volleyball National Team coaching staff for four years. Hogan was an instrumental member of the staff that led the U.S. to a Silver Medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The three-year assistant also served as the head coach for Team USA at the 2008 World Pan American Cup in Mexico.

Hogan is a 2002 graduate of Miami (Ohio) with a bachelor of arts degree in management information systems and a minor in marketing and graduated with a master's in sports administration from Xavier (Ohio) University in 2004. Hogan served as the head coach of the Miami (Ohio) University National Champion women's volleyball club team in 2002, after leading the team to the national final in 2001.

Hogan resides in Denver with his wife, Lindsay, and their daughters Summer and Sienna. Lindsay works in marketing communications for the United States Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs.
