DENVER - The University of Denver women's basketball team couldn't answer South Dakota State's fast start in a 76-39 loss on Wednesday night at Magness Arena. It was opening night in Summit League play for both teams.
Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) led the way with a team-high 12 points. She also grabbed five rebounds, tying a season high.
Senior Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) added nine points for the Pioneers, bringing her career total to 993, just seven off the elusive 1,000-point mark. Bradley would become the 23rd player in DU's program history to reach the mark.
Macy Miller powered the Jackrabbit attack, finishing with a game-high 17 points. Miller also grabbed six rebounds in the win.
3-pointers were the key to the game with SDSU able to connect on 11 for the night, eight coming in the first 20 minutes of play.
South Dakota State took control right out the gate with a 13-4 advantage going into the first media timeout. The Jackrabbits' Madison Guebert was the catalyst on offense, scoring six points during the opening run in the first quarter.
SDSU continued its strong start all the way to the end of the quarter, building its lead to 15. Hot shooting from deep was a big factor in the explosive quarter for South Dakota State, which knocked down five 3-pointers in the first.
The Jackrabbits continued the offensive assault in the second, scoring 19 points and extending their lead 28 at halftime. SDSU's outside shooting was the key in the opening half, going 8-for-15 from beyond the arc.
Bradley led all Denver scorers with eight points in the first half.
The Pioneers began the third with promise after a made 3 by Maya Rodgers (Meridian, Idaho) got things rolling. However, DU went cold from there, missing its next several shots before a basket from Poss broke the field-goal drought with 1:14 left in the quarter.
Denver delivered its highest-scoring quarter in the fourth, putting up 15 in the final minutes, which were highlighted by some made 3s from several Pioneers.
