Iowa City, IA - The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving team competed in the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday in day two of the three day meet. The Pioneers put on another strong performance as three student-athletes broke previously held school records in their individual events.
Junior Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.) broke a school record during the preliminary round of the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:00.65, which also made NCAA B standards. Redshirt junior Kyle Robrock (Savage, Minn.) broke a school record in the preliminary round of the 100 fly with a time of 47.15, which he broke again in the finals.
Robrock broke his second school record of the day in the 100 backstroke event after beating all other swimmers with a time of 46.84. Sophomore Maddie Myers (Arvada, Colo.) set a school record of her own after winning the 400 IM with a time of 4:11.34, while also making NCAA B Standards.
The men's 200 medley team of Robrock, Tim Cottam (Sydney, Australia), Patrick Guillory (Meadows Place, Texas) and Ray Bornman (Mackay, Queensland) broke another school record in their second place finish with a time of 1:26.89.
Both the men's and women's teams won the 800 freestyle relay event as the men's team of Robrock, Bornman, Scott Bergstrom (White Salmon, Wash.) and Luke Williams (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished with a time of 6:30.01, while the women's team of Myers, Alexandra Malazdrewicz (Wheat Ridge, Colo.), Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.) and Zoe Huddleston (Rothschild, Wis.) ended with a time of 7:19.14.
"I'm happy with our fourth session of racing tonight," head coach Brian Schrader said. "We have had several personal bests, and a lot of great racing. Five new school records make it a fun day, and we really had some gutty races tonight from Maddie Myers in the IM and 800 Free Relay. Ray Bornman just continues to race with some great toughness and bring others along with him. Kyle Robrock is having a great meet and elevating others as well.
"Seeing Lexi come back from injury, and make a final today and contribute to our A relay winning was a nice moment," he added. "Zoe Huddleston had a great day as a senior and had a few lifetime bests and achored our winning relay. Our juniors, Patrick Guillory, Luke Williams, Scott Bergstrom, Tim Cottam, and Travis Greenwald are having a great meet as well. It's good to see those performances and leadership."
The team will continue competition at the Hawkeye Invitational tomorrow as they begin day three in Iowa City.
