DENVER FINISHES WEEKEND WITH 13 NEW SCHOOL RECORDS

Iowa City, IA - The University of Denver men's and women's swimming team finished competition at the Hawkeye Invitational on Sunday in the final day of the three day meet. The Pioneers showed another strong performance as the team finished the weekend by setting a total of 13 new school records.

Seniors Dylan Bunch (Boulder City, Nev.) and Tyra Rooney (Calgary, Alberta) both won the 1650 freestyle event as Bunch finished with a strong NCAA B Standard time of 14:56.97 and Rooney finished with a time of 16:27.10.

Sophomores Jared Smith (Boulder City, Nev.) and Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo.) each finished first in the 200 backstroke event. Smith finished with a preliminary time of 1:46.62 and a finals time of 1:46.62, while McCormick had a preliminary time of 1:56.95 and a finals time of 1:56.03. Clara Jenck (Phoenix, Ariz.) placed fifth overall with a time of 2:01.20, while sophomore Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, NY) finished seventh (2:04.8). Connor Gillespie (Chicago, Illinois) placed seventh in his race with a time of 1:49.72.

"Jared stepped into a great role tonight and Morgan dominated from start to finish," head coach Brian Schrader said.

Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.) set a new school record in the preliminary round of the 200 breaststroke and then broke it again in finals, finishing with a time of 2:08.76, good for first place. This race will also be an NCAA qualifying swim.

Schrader added that the team had some outstanding swims in the men's 100 freestyle event as Ray Bornman (Mackay, Queensland) broke his school record with a time of 43.17 and Kyle Robrock (Savage, Minn.) was second with a fast time of 43.35. On the women's side, Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.) placed fourth in the 100 free (50.31), while Zoe Huddleston (Rothschild, Wis.) finished sixth (51.12).

In the 100 yard butterfly event, Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) placed second with a time of 54.23, while Gabrielle Penvenne (Los Osos, Calif.) finished seventh with a time of 56.15. On the men's side, Robrock finished second overall (47.15) and Patrick Guillory (Meadows Place, Texas) placed fourth with a time of 48.55.

The 200 yard butterfly event saw Bradley record another second place finish (2:01.29), while Grace Sommerville (Ashburton, New Zealand) finished seventh with a time of 2:04.66. For the men, Kyle Ewoldt (Gilbert, Ariz.) placed third with a time of 1:48.34, Ben Ussery (Austin, Texas) finished right behind his teammate (1:48.94) and Scott Bergstrom (White Salmon, Wash.) placed sixth overall with a time of 1:50.79.

Alexandra Malazdrewicz (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) finished third in the 200 yard freestyle event with a time of 1:49.77. The men saw four student-athletes finish in the top-8 of the same event, with Bornman finishing first (1:35.87), Luke Williams (Scottsdale, Ariz.) close behind in second place (1:37.62, Bergstrom in seventh (1:39.19) and Marco Russo (La Mesa, Calif.) in eighth (1:39.83).

The women's 100 yard breaststroke event saw Sanders finish second overall with a time of 1:01.16, while teammate Eyolfson placed seventh (1:04.42). On the men's side, Tim Cottam (Sydney, Australia) finished second in the same event (53.92), while Guillory placed fourth (55.16) and junior Travis Greenwald (Wilton, IA) finished eighth (55.49).

Madeline Eyolfson (Boise, Idaho) finished sixth in the women's 200 yard breaststroke event (2:18.12), while Bailey Andison (Smith Falls, Ontario) finished close behind in seventh place (2:18.52). For the men, Cottam placed third (1:59.32), Greenwald finished fifth (2:00.13) and Guillory finished seventh overall (2:01.07).

The DU men's team had three student-athletes finish in the Top-8 of the 200 yard breaststroke event. Cottam finished second with a preliminary time of 54.79 and a finals time of 53.92. Guillory swam to a fourth place finish after having a preliminary time of 54.68 and a finals time 55.16. Greenwald finished eighth overall with a preliminary time of 54.72 and a finals time of 55.49.

Sophomore Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo.) had a strong performance in the 100 yard backstroke event, finishing third overall (55.06) while teammate Moden placed sixth with a time of 55.60.

The women's 400 yard IM saw Denver have the top-4 finishes. Maddie Myers (Arvada, Colo.) finished first (4:11.34), setting a new meet record. Andison placed second (4:15.58), McCormick finished third with a time of 4:19.15 and Clara Jenck (Phoenix, Ariz.) placed fourth overall with a time of 4:20.32.

The men's team had three student-athletes finish in the top-8 of their 400 yard IM as Ewoldt finished third (3:52.53), Bunch placed fourth (3:54.97) and Ben Severino (Des Moines, Iowa) finished seventh with a time of 3:59.48.

The women's 200 medley relay team of McCormick, Sanders, Bradley and Huddleston finished second with a time of 1:41.34, while the team of Lauren Moden, Eyolfson, Penvenne and Morgan Wice-Roslin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed eighth with a time of 1:44.30. The men's 200 medley relay team of Robrock, Cottam, Guillory and Bornman finished second in the race (1:26.89), while the team of Greenwald, Gillespie, Ussery and Russo placed eighth with a time of 1:31.35.

The 400 yard free relay teams finished up the meet with strong performances highlighted by the men's team of Bornman, Robrock, Guillory and Williams smashing the school record with a time of 2:54.56. The women's relay team of Malazdrewicz, Moden, Wice-Roslin, and Huddleston finished second overall in their race with a time of 3:21.68.

Junior Larissa Grammer (Olathe, Colo.) finished 18th overall in the one meter diving event and 16th in the three meter event. She also placed 14th on tower. This marks the first time Grammer recorded points at the Hawkeye Invitational. Freshman Ryan Reed (Springdale, Ark.) had the highest score for DU male divers, finishing in 9th place in the one meter event and 10th place overall in the three meter diving event.

The University of Denver swim team will have a few weeks off for their winter break before returning to action on Jan. 9 when both the men's and women's teams host Wyoming at El Pomar Natatorium.
