Feb. 13, 2015 MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The No. 18 University of Denver women's gymnastics team topped West Virginia on the road in a Friday night meet, scoring a 195.425 to WVU's 194.600. In total, the Pioneers won four individual titles, including junior Katie Menhinick (Paramus, N.J.) who won her first career all-around title. Junior Emily Barrett (Norman, Okla.) also competed in the all-around, finishing third.
"It's nice to walk away with a win," head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said following the meet. "Our student-athletes adjusted well to the varying lineup changes, and they have learned how to compete on the road."
Denver started the meet on bars with a team total of 48.800, the team's second highest this season. Menhinick led off for DU with a 9.750, which sophomore Julia Ross (Henderson, Nev.) matched later in the rotation. Barrett scored a 9.650 second up for DU. Freshman Nikole Addison (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) added a 9.775, her second highest tally this year, which earned her third place in the final standings. Senior Nina McGee (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted the Pioneers' top score on the event with a 9.850 and second place overall. Freshman Brittany Franklin (Carrollton, Texas) finished the rotation with a 9.675.
The team next headed to vault, adding a 49.050, led by McGee's event-winning 9.875. Menhinick started the rotation with 9.700, which Ross answered with a 9.825, tying her personal best and landing her in third in the final event standings. Junior Maggie Laughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz.) competed her second vault of the season and scored a 9.775. Barrett also scored a 9.775, and sophomore Rachel Fielitz (Walden, N.Y.) closed the rotation with a 9.800.
For the third rotation, Denver moved to floor and started with Menhinick's 9.750. Fielitz and Barrett performed second and third for the Pioneers, and each scored a 9.775. Laughlin and senior Ellese Sakai-Hart (Aptos, Calif.) added matching 9.825s. McGee topped off the rotation with a 9.875, tying her for another event title.
DU wrapped up the meet on beam. Menhinick once again stepped up first for the Pioneers, scoring a 9.675, which was followed by a 9.750 from Fielitz. Unfortunately, sophomore Leah Lomonte (Katy, Texas) had an uncharacteristic fall, scoring 8.950. The team banded together and fought for their remaining routines. Barrett earned a 9.525, and Sakai-Hart added a 9.750. Ross posted the highest score for either team with her third 9.800 of the season.
"It's nice to see Katie and Emily have success in the all-around, and for Julia to win beam," said Kutcher-Rinehart. "We're looking forward to coming home next weekend."
