Denver -The University of Denver (7-16, 4-5 Summit) fell to IUPUI (11-12, 6-4 Summit) at Magness Arena 68-64 on Wednesday night. Senior Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the Pioneers with 17 points and five assists.
Trailing 66-64, the Pioneers had a chance to tie the game or take the lead with less than 30 seconds remaining. Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) drove the lane and put up a one-handed floater that was off the mark and Shaquira Scott secured the rebound. Scott was fouled immediately by Van Riper-Rose, which sent Scott to the free throw line. Scott knocked down both foul shots pushing the lead to 68-64 and that's how it would end.
Denver trailed by as much as eight in the first half and took the lead by one with five-and-half minutes to go in the second half. The Pioneers tallied a season-high seven blocks.
Starting point guard Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) added 12 points along with four assists and six rebounds. Poss also scored 12 points and tied her career-high with three assists. Forward Alecia Espinoza (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) tied her career-high with 12 rebounds and scored eight points. Jesse Spittel (Yorba Linda, Calif.) grabbed nine rebounds and tallied a new career-high with four blocks. Freshman Jordyn Alt (North Oaks, Minn.) grabbed eight rebounds and put in six points in 17 minutes of action off the bench.
Van Riper-Rose and Poss scored 10 of their points in the first half, which ended with the Pioneers trailing 35-31 at the break. Denver grabbed 19 rebounds in the first half, including seven offensive rebounds, which they converted into 11 second-chance points in the first half.
Senior Nevena Markovic had a double-double for the Jaguars with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Scott also added 18 points to go along with nine rebounds.
For the game, Denver shot 39 percent (24-of-61) from the field and 29 percent (5-of-17) from the 3-point line, while IUPUI connected on 40 percent (25-of-63) of its attempts from the field and 40 percent (6-of-15) from behind the 3-point arc. The Pioneers sank 73 percent (11-of-15) of their free throw attempts. IUPUI dropped in 86 percent (12-of-14) of their attempts from the foul line.
Denver hits the road this weekend, traveling to Tulsa for a matchup with the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT. It will be the second meeting between these two teams, the Pioneers defeated the Golden Eagles 66-57 at Magness Arena on January 4. An audio-only broadcast will be available on Pioneer Vision.
