Why The University of Denver?

Feb. 6, 2015

DENVER - There are a multitude of reasons why a student chooses a specific college to matriculate. They can range anywhere from a challenging discipline of study to "my friends all went there."

Fortunately, the members of the Pioneers women's golf team didn't decide to attend the University of Denver for frivolous reasons. Getting a world class education and playing collegiate golf on the highest level seems to be the predominant theme.

Here are the specific reasons why the seven ladies on head coach Lindsay Kuhle's golf squad decided to come to DU as told in their own words.

Freshman Jessica Dreesbeimdieke is a native of Windhoek, Namibia, which located in Southwest Africa. Dreesbeimdieke says, "I chose DU because it was an unbelievable opportunity for me to attend an institution of high athletic and academic standard, especially coming from a small town where opportunities like this rarely present themselves."

Another freshman with a bright future is Aleana Groenhout, from Kirkland, Washington. She says, "I came to Denver because I love the location, the University has great academics and the athletic program here is fantastic."

The two sophomores on the team both hail from Europe. Mariell Bruun, from Larvik, Norway, explains why she decided Denver is the place for her. "I choose DU because of the coaching staff, the great team and the environment. It seemed to be a place where I could get the best opportunities to improve my game the most; having the whole season outdoors and having the little break during winter to be inside working."

Jessica Carty, hails from Holywood, Northern Ireland, the same hometown as family friend Rory McIlroy. She says, "I chose DU because I thought it was a fantastic opportunity to study in an amazing location, and to be part of a great program with a hard-working team and equally dedicated coaches."

There are two juniors on the team who share why they decided on DU.

Elyse Smidinger, out of Crafton, Maryland gets right to the point. "I chose DU for the outstanding academics and the opportunity to play golf for an excellent program."

Isabel Southard, known to her teammates as Izzy, is from the East coast as well, Sharon, Massachusetts, to be exact. Southard states, "I chose DU for the excellent academic and golf facilities, the location in the state of Colorado, and the atmosphere of passionate players like myself to facilitate improving every day."

Finally, senior Rachael Watton, from Edinburgh, Scotland, the country where golf was invented says, "I chose DU for the prestige of the golf program, academic reputation and the proximity to the mountains."

Those are all pretty solid reasons for the student-athletes on the golf team to attend the University of Denver.

The 2015 women's golf season gets underway next weekend in Palo Alto, California.
