March 21, 2015 DENVER - The University of Denver Gymnastics' Nina McGee (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the all-around, beam and floor titles at the 2015 Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championships on Saturday night in Magness Arena. McGee was alsoannounced as theconference Gymnast of the Year.
The No. 14 Pioneers finished third on the night with a 196.075. Boise State won the title (196.625), followed by Southern Utah in second (196.275). Utah State (195.125) and BYU (194.225) finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.
"It was a tough night for us," head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We performed really well on the first three events, and then we had an uncharacteristic performance on floor, our best event. But we're really proud of Nina for winning the all-around and earning Gymnast of the Year."
Denver started the night on vault, tallying a 49.150 team score. Freshman Nikole Addison (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) began the rotation with a 9.750, which sophomore Julia Ross (Henderson, Nev.) followed with a 9.825. Juniors Maggie Laughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Emily Barrett (Norman, Okla.) scored 9.775 and 9.800 next for DU. McGee (9.850) and sophomore Rachel Fielitz (Walden, N.Y.) closed the rotation, with Fielitz tying at the top of the final podium with a 9.900.
After a bye in the second rotation, DU moved to bars, where the Pioneers scored 48.925 overall. Junior Katie Menhinick (Paramus, N.J.) and Addison each scored 9.700 in the first two routines. After a fall and 9.075 from Barrett, Ross posted a 9.850, and junior Rachel Feeken (Tampa, Fla.) added a 9.775. McGee scored the highest routine of the night for Denver, a 9.900, placing her in a tie for second in the final event standings.
The Pioneers rotated to beam for the fourth rotation and added a 49.200, making it their best rotation on the night. Menhinick again competed first for DU, scoring 9.750. Fielitz kept the scores trending upward with a 9.800, which was followed by two 9.875s from senior Ellese Sakai-Hart (Aptos, Calif.), which tied her personal best, and sophomore Leah Lomonte (Katy, Texas). Ross stumbled in her routine, scoring a 9.275. McGee had the highest score for the meet on the event, a 9.900 to give her the title. Sakai-Hart and Lomonte tied for second with two other gymnasts.
DU finished the meet on floor with a 48.800 effort. After a fall from Fielitz (9.100), Menhinick followed with a 9.500. Sakai-Hart got the rotation back on track with a 9.875, tying her for second in the final standings. Addison tallied a 9.650, and Laughlin followed with a 9.825. McGee closed out the meet with the final routine of the night, scoring 9.950 to take the title.
"I'm confident that we will regroup," Kutcher-Rinehart said after the meet. "Now we get ready for Regionals."
The 2015 NCAA Regionals Selection Show is set for 1 p.m. Denver time on Monday, March 23, which will be streamed live on NCAA.com, during which the top 36 teams in the nation will be assigned to one of six Regionals sites across the U.S.
