Pioneers Fall to Aztecs to Conclude San Diego Tournament

SAN DIEGO, CALIF.- The No. 43 University of Denver men's tennis team (9-7, 1-0 Summit League) could not continue the momentum from the win yesterday as they fell to No. 38 San Diego State (12-5), 4-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers grabbed the lead early winning the doubles point. The No. 43 duo of junior Henry Craig and sophomore Alex Gasson would earn their third win of the weekend in as many days. They defeated the No. 63 pairing of Freddy Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens, 6-2. Sophomores Diogo Rocha and Yannik James sealed the point again with a, 7-5 win over Thorsten Bertsch and Jonas Meinzer.
"SDSU was just too good in the singles for us today," said Head Coach Danny Westerman. "We started out great winning the doubles point. We were hoping Foxy (David Fox) could turn that second set and force a third as courts one and two were very tight.
In singles action the Pioneers could not outduel the Aztecs. SDSU would take wins on courts three, four, five, and six to take the match victory.
"We had a great week and are definitely playing better tennis than we did a week ago," said Westerman. "We are looking forward to getting back to campus and getting back to work."
The Pioneers will return to Denver for a match against No. 66 UC Santa Barbara on Thursday March 26, beginning at 1:00 p.m. MT.
