March 5, 2015 DENVER - The University of Denver women's golf team will tee off Friday in the 43rd annual University of Florida Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Florida. It's the third tournament of the spring and the third time zone for the Pioneers after competing in Palo Alto, California and New Orleans, Louisiana.
"We are excited to be in Florida for the first time in a few years and back at the course that we know well from the 2009 regional championship," said Denver head coach Lindsay Kuhle. "We have great memories at this course and are excited to compete."
Junior Isabel Southard, (Sharon, Mass.) has been the most consistent Pioneer early on. She leads a lineup that also consists of Mariell Bruun (Larvik, Norway), Elyse Smidinger (Crofton, Md.), Jessica Dreesbeimdieke (Windhoek, Namibia) and Jessica Carty (Holywood, Northern Ireland).
"All five ladies have scored well in an 18-hole round and hit some amazing shots this spring and I am looking forward to the opportunity of putting three solid rounds together as a team," Kuhle said.
The event will be held at the historic Mark Bostick Golf Course on the Florida campus. Golf has been played on this 6,701-yard, par 70 course since the 1920's and has undergone many up upgrades and renovations that has made it a physically and mentally difficult course to navigate.
"This course is challenging and rewards smart course management with proper approach shot placement," explained Kuhle. "We've been working very hard this week on our mental preparation, course management and putting and I am really excited to see the ladies in action. We are up for the challenge and look at this course and tournament as an exciting opportunity to compete and test our games to end the first half of our spring season."
In addition to Denver and host school Florida, other schools competing in the Gator Invitational include Arizona, Clemson, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia Regents University, Kent State, Missouri, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Penn State, Tulane, Central Florida and Texas-San Antonio.
