Pioneers Shine in First Outdoor Home Match of Season

DENVER- The No. 42 University of Denver men's tennis team (8-5, 1-0 Summit League) handled the Marquette Golden Eagles (6-7) Saturday at the Gates Tennis Center, 7-0.
The Pioneers controlled the match from the beginning when they collected their sixth sweep of the doubles pointthis season. Sophomores Yannik James and Diogo Rocha have now won nine doubles matches together. They alsohave won six of their last eight after they took down Nick Dykema and Andre Romanello, 6-3. The point was clinched shortly thereafter when junior David Fox and sophomore Alex Gasson defeated Daniel Fernandez and Vakasin Teofanovic, 6-4 at the number one position.
"I was very pleased to have a complete performance today," said Head Coach Danny Westerman. "Every single player on our team played smart and composed."
Denver would win five out of six singles courts in straight sets. No. 96 Rocha earned his team leading 10th win on the season. He is now 10-2 on the year. Right behind him is his partner Yannik James with his 9th win of the season over Kritiyan Trukov, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Zach Fryer saw action in his first match of the season. He would pick up the first singles victory for the Pioneers, 6-1, 6-1 over Mackenzie Stearns.
"We will take a break now for final exams," said Westerman. "We hope to take this momentum into spring break where we will have some great opportunities."
The Pioneers will be off until a trip to San Diego for the San Diego Invitational March 19-21.
