PIONEERS CELEBRATE AT END-OF-SEASON BANQUET

April 2, 2015

DENVER --  The University of Denver women's basketball team celebrated its 2014-15 seniors and the team's accomplishments from the season at their year-end banquet, hosted in the Marion Gottesfeld Room at the Daniel L. Ritchie Center for Sports and Wellness. Seniors Jordan Johnston (Waterloo, Iowa), Theresa Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) and Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) were honored for their dedication to the program and their on and off the court accomplishments during their four-year careers.

Point guard and floor general Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) received the Most Valauble Player award for the Pioneers. Bradley was All-Summit League Honorable Mention for the second year in a row. Bradley led the team in points (382), assists (132), steals (31) and 3-point shooting percentage (42%). On Jan. 24, in an 82-75 win over the IPFW Mastodons, Bradley set the Denver women's basketball program record for most assists in a game with 14.

Van Riper-Rose and sophomore Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) each received the Pioneer Award, which is an award that exemplifies dedication to the program, being the ultimate teammate and hard work. Van Riper-Rose was the team captain and unquestionably the leader of the team. Van Riper-Rose did a masterful job of keeping the team together during the tough stretches of the season, while assisting in the development of the underclassmen. Poss played an instrumental role for the Pioneers as the leading scorer off the bench with a 7.9 points per game average and made a team best 87 percent from the free throw line. Poss' effort and selfless play was unmatched, as she lead the team in hustle plays and floor burns.

Van Riper-Rose put together a truly outstanding career, finishing with the 9th most points in program history (1,327). Van Riper-Rose's 232 career 3-pointers ranks second in school history and her career free throw percentage of 83 percent is the highest in program history. In a 107-66 victory over the Air Force Academy Falcons on Dec. 8, Van Riper-Rose set the DU record by draining 10 3-pointers, which ties her for third most 3-pointers in a single game in NCAA D-I women's basketball history. Van Riper-Rose appeared in 122 games, which is the second most in program history and started in 106 games.

Senior guard Jordan Johnston played in 124 games over her four-year career, which ties her for the most in program history, while her 124 career 3-pointers are the sixth highest total in school history. In her career, Johnston scored 826 points, collected 301 rebounds and dished out 114 assists.

Senior Theresa Wirth was an All-Summit League Honorable Mention recipient during the 2013-14 season, but was forced to miss her entire senior year with a shoulder injury. Her commitment, leadership and enthusiasm for her teammates and the program never wavered. For her career, she finished with 538 points and 344 rebounds.

Denver had a night for the record books in a win over the Air Force Academy Falcons on Dec. 8. On the strength of Van Riper-Rose's 10 3-pointers, the team hit a combined 19 3-pointers, which is a program record, a Summit League record and put this Pioneer team in a tied for the fourth most 3-pointers in a single game in NCAA D-I women's basketball history. Denver scored 107 points that night, which is tied for the second most points in program history.

The future looks bright for the 2015-16 Pioneers as they welcome three freshmen to next year's roster that returns 10 letter-winners. Small forward Maya Rodgers (Meridian, Idaho), guard Sam Romanowski (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.) and Colorado product Haley Simental (Pueblo West, Colo.) will be joining the Pioneers.
