DU LEADs AFTER TWO ROUNDS OF SUMMIT LEAGUE TOURNEY

April 21, 2015

Final Results

SEASIDE, Calif. -- After sharing the lead following the first round of the Summit League tournament on Monday, Denver and Oral Roberts battled throughout round two on Tuesday with the Pioneers finishing strong late to garner an eight shot advantage heading into Wednesday's final round. DU sits at 43-over par with the Golden Eagles in a second place tie with South Dakota State at 51-over par.

"It was a tough day out there and we never really gained any momentum," said Denver head coach Lindsay Kuhle, who is seeking her second consecutive Summit League Championship. "The back nine played difficult for us today with the wind and certain hole locations."

Elyse Smidinger (Crofton, Md.) led the Pioneers on day two with a 3-over par 75. Smidinger is 8-over par overall, good for second place, heading into round three. Paola Aviles of Oral Roberts rests atop the leaderboard at 7-over par, just one shot ahead of Smidinger. Natalie Roth of North Dakota State is in third place looming just two shots behind Aviles at 9-over par setting up what should be a dramatic final round.

"I am so happy for Elyse to play so well and have a great round out here today," Kuhle commented on her junior. "Her 34 on the front nine was very impressive."

DU's Jessica Carty (Holywood, Northern Ireland), who shared the lead after the first round, shot 10-over for the day and resides in fourth place at 12-over par. Mariell Bruun (Larvik, Norway) was 8-over on the day and is 13-over for two rounds, good for a fifth place tie. Isabel Southard (Sharon, Mass) is right behind her teammate at 14-over par, placing her in a tie for ninth place.

"Tomorrow, coach Cutler and I look to all five players to focus on their commitments, what they can control and giving a perfect effort on every shot," Kuhle explained regarding strategy heading into the final round. "If we have fun, compete and play with a good game plan to hit more fairways, we will be very happy to have represented the Denver women's golf team at this league championship."

The third and final round of the tournament at the Bayonet Golf Club will be held Wednesday with the weather expected to be partly cloudy, a 20-percent chance of showers with high temperatures in the low 60's.
