LOMPOC, Calif. -- There will be no championship repeat for the University of Denver men's golf team. The Pioneers finished sixth in the nine team field, six shots behind fifth place IUPUI. South Dakota, at 45-over par, rallied to win the Summit League tournament by three strokes over Oral Roberts. DU completed the tourney at 67-over par on the challenging La Purisima Golf Course.
The individual championship went to Jose Pablo Segurola of IUPUI who shot 3-over par for the three day event. Segurola passed Scott Newell of Oral Roberts who bogied four of the last five holes. Newell finished two shots back.
"We learned a lot this week about this particular golf course and about ourselves as well," said Denver head coach Erik Billinger. "Overall, this season was a huge success with lots of positives, top finishes and good memories. I love this team and our guys."
Denver's Arti Edelman, who had the highlight of the tournament for the Pioneers with a hole-in-one during the first round, finished tied for 14th with teammate Petter Mikalsen. Both were 16-over par. Mikalsen shot the low score for the Pioneers in round three at 2-over par.
Right behind was Chris Korte who ended up tied for 17th at 17-over par. Jake Kelley was one shot behind Korte, his high school teammate, at 18-over par.
Patrick Frodigh (Westwood, Mass.), who could never get on track, completed the tournament tied for 40th place at 31-over par.
"Also, I want to congratulate South Dakota on the win," said Billinger. "It will be great for them to get to go to regionals."
As for the Pioneers, they'll head into the collegiate off-season looking to improve as individuals. The fall season will be here before you know it.
