Berg Named Tewaaraton Finalist

May 7, 2015

WASHINGTON  -- [3/3] University of Denver men's lacrosse senior attackman Wesley Berg (Coquitlam, B.C.) has been named one of five finalists for the prestigious Tewaaraton Award, the committee announced on Thursday.

"Wesley Berg is the epitome of the type of student-athlete we have been blessed with here at the University of Denver," head coach Bill Tierney said. "He came to DU with great lacrosse skills and by the end of his freshman year, he was instrumental in our run to the NCAA Quarterfinals. He continued to be an impact player as we made the Final Four in both his sophomore and junior seasons. This year, Wes has taken his game to a new level. He has been our leader in the locker room and on the field. His willingness to fight off double-teams, shut-offs and quick slides, while helping our offense score 14 goals a game contributed greatly to winning the Big East Championship. Most of all, Wes is such a mature leader, very good student and wonderful teammate. Being Denver's first Tewaaraton Finalist is a fitting culmination to the career of a great young man."

Berg has 60 points on 43 goals and 17 assists in 2015, including 10 first-half points against Villanova on April 3, earning him USILA National Player of the Week honors. The Pioneer senior set the DU career points and goals records on April 11 against St. John's, and now sits on 237 career points and 173 career goals. Berg's 173 career goals are the most of any active player in the NCAA, two ahead of Albany's Lyle Thompson.

Thompson (Albany), Myles Jones (Duke), Matt Kavanagh (Notre Dame) and Kevin Rice (Syracuse) were the other four finalists announced on Thursday.  The five finalists have been invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony which will be held in Washington, D.C., on May 28, 2015, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.

In addition to this being the first Pioneer selected as a finalist, Berg is the third player under Tierney to be named a finalist, a list that includes his son and current volunteer assistant Trevor Tierney (2001).

Denver hosts Brown in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT on ESPNU at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
