BROCKTON, Mass. - University of Denver women's golf senior captain Isabel Southard (Sharon, Mass.) won the WGAM Amateur Championship for a second straight year on Monday. The senior fired a 76 in the first round and then proceeded to win five matches to successfully defend her title.
The four-day tournament took place over the past weekend at the Thorny Lea Golf Club, with opening-round play that started on August 10. The 5,823-yard course had a par of 74.
"I am so happy and proud of Izzy for winning this tournament for the second year in a row," said head coach Lindsay Kuhle. "She is such a competitor and loves match play tournaments. It was fun following her matches all week long; and I am very excited for her to begin her final season on this team as captain. She is a great player and leader and I think big things are ahead for Izzy and our team."
The Sharon, Mass. native opened her tournament with a two-over-par 76 in the first round of play on Monday. After the opening round, the tournament went into match play format. Southard then knocked off Cheryl Kruger, Julia Ford, Jacquelyn Eleey, and Shannon Johnson as part of her run to the title.
With the win, Southard earned an exemption into the Boston Symetra Tour event this upcoming weekend.
