LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Denver Pioneers (7-3) lost to New Mexico State 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 10-15) Saturday in their first match of the final day of the Borderland Classic.
Despite the impressive performance by Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), the Pioneers could not power past the Aggies. Schmid, who is eighth among active NCAA DI players in hitting percentage, hit a career-high .706 in the match with 13 kills and one error on 17 attempts. The senior middle blocker also led the team with nine blocks in the match.
Denver recorded 18 total blocks in the match compared to New Mexico State's 8.5; Kayla Principato (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) each tallied two solo blocks in the match. Principato also led the Pioneers with 14 kills, including four in the second set without an error.
DU dominated the Aggies in the second and fourth sets. Denver hit .414 in the second set and held New Mexico State to .025. The Pioneers led the Aggies from start to finish of the fourth set with the help of four service aces, including two by Monique Domme (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
Denver suffered from attacking errors in the final set, ultimately falling to New Mexico State in its first five-set and back-to-back loss of the season.
The Pioneers will Brown in their final match of the Borderland Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., at 7 p.m. MT.
