DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 result to Villanova on Friday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Villanova netted its opener in the 42nd minute as Reanna Marino finished a rebound from six-yards out off a Katie Martin strike to put the Wildcats up a goal late in the first half. The Wildcats' Amanda Vocelka converted a spot kick in the 70th minute to double the visitor's advantage.
Denver's two best chances of the match came in the second half, as the Pioneers were denied by the crossbar twice in the second frame. Freshman Leah Swander (Grand Junction, Colo.) hit the woodwork in the 53rd, uncorking a shot from the right side of the area. In the 81st, junior Brooke Boothe (Ontario, Calif.) shook the frame on a header off a Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) corner kick.
The Wildcats outshot Denver 13-11 in the Pioneers' second-to-last nonconference contest of 2015. DU held a 6-2 edge in corners, taking all six of those set pieces in the second 45 minutes.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers will continue their three-match homestand a week from Saturday when Denver welcomes Portland to CIBER Field (7 p.m.).
