DENVER - The Pioneers reached 10 wins after defeating Montana 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 13-15, 25-14) Friday in the Denver Invitational.

Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) led Denver will 11 kills in the match, making up more than a quarter of Denver's 41 kills in the match. Piyusha Boteju (Euless, Texas) led the DU setters with 22 assists in the match, and Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the blockers with five total blocks.

The Pioneers came out strong to begin the match before Montana tied the set up at 7. Denver and Montana fought through 10 more ties before Denver ultimately won the first set 25-23 on a kill from Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.). Corrujedo led the Pioneers in the first set with four kills, while Boteju recorded seven assists. Cassie Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) had two service aces in the set to help Denver to the victory.

Despite only tallying nine kills in the second set, the Pioneers were able to come out victorious by a score of 25-23 for the second straight set. Baird recorded two more service aces in the second set, tying her career high. Schmid recorded two blocks in the set, while Corrujedo, Kayla Principato (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Emma Willis (La Jolla, Calif.) and Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) each added in one.

Denver struggled in the third set as Montana forced a -.029 hitting performance and nine attacking errors by the Pioneers, their first negative hitting percentage in a set this season and just one error shy of the most errors in a single set by DU this season. Denver had only eight kills in the set, while the Grizzlies recorded 12 and a .355 hitting percentage, their best of the match.

DU rebounded in the fourth set, hitting .423 with only one error. Corrujedo led the Pioneers with four kills in the fourth set, and Okoye earned two kills on two attempts. Denver and Montana battled early in the match before the Pioneers earned a 10-9 lead they did not relinquish, ultimately winning the fourth set 25-14.

The Pioneers will play Abilene Christian in the final match of the Denver Invitational tonight at 7 p.m. MT.
