DENVER - The University of Denver volleyball team swept in-state rival Northern Colorado (25-18, 25-13, 25-13) Tuesday in Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneers are 12-3 heading into Summit League play this weekend.
The Pioneers dominated the Bears throughout the match; Northern Colorado did not lead Denver once in the match. DU's defense excelled, forcing a -.035 hitting performance by the Bears in the match. The Pioneers had 20 fewer errors than Northern Colorado, hitting .233 in the match.
"Well, always nice to get a win against an in-state rival," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "I thought we played extremely well from the service line. Cassidy Rooke (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Cassie Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) especially point-scored very well. Once we settled down in the match and started passing well and could distribute the ball a little bit better, I don't think that UNC had an answer for our offense. So it was a great way to end preseason, and we're excited to start Summit League play."
Baird led Denver from the service line with two service aces, marking her 12th match this season with an ace as well as her fifth multi-ace match. Rooke, Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) also recorded aces, with Corrujedo's ace as the match point.
Denver spread out its offense. Every player who had a kill tallied at least three in the match. Corrujedo led the Pioneers with eight kills, and Baird contributed six to DU's total. Both setters aided the offense, with Monique Domme (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Piyusha Boteju (Euless, Texas) logging 14 and 11 assists, respectively.
DU tallied 10 total blocks in the match. Baird and Schmid each recorded a solo block, while Emma Willis (La Jolla, Calif.) led the Pioneers with a career-high six block assists.
Denver kicks off Summit League play in back-to-back matches, at IPFW Friday, September 25 and IUPUI Saturday, September 26.The Pioneers return to Hamilton Gymnasium Tuesday, September 29 in their first Summit League home match vs. North Dakota State.
