DENVER - The University of Denver volleyball team swept North Dakota State (25-22, 25-16, 25-20) Tuesday in Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneers are 2-1 in the Summit League and 14-4 overall with two more home Summit League matches this week.

Cassie Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) led DU with 11 kills in the match, including four in each of the final two sets. Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added nine to Denver's kill total, while Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.) and Kayla Principato (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) each accounted for eight kills.

Denver was hindered by its service performance, with nine service errors in the match, although Baird, Cassidy Rooke (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Piyusha Boteju (Euless, Texas) each recorded a service ace in the match.

The Pioneers and Bison battled throughout the match. The teams underwent 19 lead changes and 32 ties, although each set ended with the same outcome.

The Pioneers claimed the first set 25-22, with back-to-back kills from Schmid sealing the victory. Schmid tallied five kills in the first set, and Baird, Okoye and Principato each had three kills. DU amasses 27 digs in the first set, with Rooke accounting for eight of them.

Denver broke a 13-13 ties in the second set with an eight-point run. Behind the serve of Boteju, the Pioneers took a solid 21-13 lead and the momentum. The Pioneers had their best hitting performance of the match, hitting .467 in the second set. Once again, back-to-back kills earned Denver the victory, this time with Baird concluding the 25-16 set.

Baird led the Pioneers with four kills in the final set as well as a service ace. Rooke also pitched in a service ace and seven digs. Denver took the lead at 10-9 and did not surrender it for the rest of the set, ultimately winning the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Denver will host two more Summit League opponents this week as it takes on South Dakota State Friday, October 2 and South Dakota Sunday, October 4.
