DAVIS, Calif. - The University of Denver women's soccer team fell to UC Davis by a count of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Stadium. Denver will make its 2015 home debut on Friday in its final match of the Colorado Cup against Colorado. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the match will air live on Altitude.
"Our players are playing their hearts out, but it just wasn't our day today," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "This was a tough way to end a long road trip, but we just need to keep our spirits up, and continue to keep our heads up. We need to regain our focus in this week of training before we play Colorado on Friday."
Freshman Leah Swander (Grand Junction, Colo.) made her first start following an injury suffered early in the match last week against Wyoming. Swander created two chances in the opening 10 minutes of Sunday's match, but both were kept out by Davis' keeper Alexis Smith.
Senior center back Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) took two dangerous free kicks in the Pioneers' attacking third, the first kept out by Smith at the near post just after the quarter hour mark, and the second rising just over the crossbar in the 78th minute.
The Aggies' Haley Hughes netted her first of the season in the 24th minute to open the scoring off a rebound after junior Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) denied Andi Damian's attempt on goal. UC Davis added a brace from Rachel Smith who netted one goal in each half off assists from Mandy McKeegan.
Senior Tina Vargas (Issaquah, Wash.) made her first appearance of the season, coming on for Rey in the 39th minute. Rey made three saves and allowed the Davis' opener before getting her foot stuck in the ground coming out for a ball, and missing the rest of the match with an injury. The DU senior made two saves in 52 minutes in her season debut.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers begin a three-match homestand on Friday against Colorado at 7 p.m. MT.
