DENVER - The No. 16 University of Denver women's gymnastics team tallied another team win, this time over Washington on Saturday night at home. DU won by a final score of 195.650-194.300.
Senior Nina McGee (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a 39.500 overall, a new season best, on her way to her third consecutive all-around title. Additionally, she finished atop the podium on three events: vault, bars and floor.
"I thought we had three successful events tonight, but beam needs to improve," said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. "We're an extremely strong beam team, and beam is actually our best event. When we do put all four events together, we'll see things change significantly. I think we're ready to make an impact nationally."
Denver started the meet with a 49.200 on vault, the highest that the team has scored on the event this season. The Pioneers swept the event podium, topped by McGee with a 9.900. Freshman Diana Chesnok (Charlotte, N.C.) finished in second with a career-high 9.850, her first top-three finish of her career. Sophomore Nikole Addison (Fort Myers, Fla) and junior Julia Ross (Henderson, Nev.) finished in a three-way tie for third with a 9.825. Freshman Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla) set a new career high with a 9.800.
The team moved to bars for the second rotation, tallying a 49.000, led by McGee's event-winning 9.875. Ross finished up in second place with a 9.850. Chesnok had the third-highest score for DU with a 9.775 and finished just off the podium.
DU fought through beam to ensure the team would not have to count a fall, ending up with a team total of 48.300. For the second straight meet, Ross led the team on beam with a 9.800, putting her in a three-way tie for second. McGee followed Ross' routine with a 9.750.
The Pioneers closed out the meet on floor with a 49.150, improving their season high on the event by two tenths with a 49.175. McGee performed the final routine of the night, scoring a near-perfect 9.975 and earning a standing ovation. Sophomore Claire Hammen (Loveland, Colo) set a personal best, this time with a 9.825, tying with teammate Addison for second overall. Senior Emily Barrett (Norman, Okla.) added a 9.775 in her first competitive floor routine of the season.
"I'm really proud of how the freshmen stepped up," Kutcher-Rinehart said after the meet. "We were without Maggie (Laughlin) tonight, as well as Rachel (Fielitz) and Leah (Lomonte), so we had to substitute line ups, and the entire team had to step up, and they did."
Talking about McGee's third straight all-around win, Kutcher-Rinehart added, "I'm so proud of Nina for her consistency and confidence every week. She deserves the success she gets, especially with how well she's trained and performed each meet."
Denver's next meet is next Saturday, January 30, at Bowling Green. DU will be back at home on Saturday, February 6, for a televised meet against Utah State that is set to start at 5 p.m. Tickets are just $9--and $6 for groups of 20 or more--and are available through the Ritchie Center Box Office or by calling 303-871-2336.
