DENVER - Turning in her best performance as a Pioneer, Jordyn Alt's (North Oaks, Minn.) 13 points and career-high 17 rebounds helped guide the University of Denver women's basketball team to a 53-50 overtime win against IPFW on Saturday afternoon.
DU used a second-half rally to get itself back in the game, highlighted by a dominant defensive fourth quarter which saw Denver outscore the Mastodons 15-6.
Alt's double-double performance was her second of the season. The 17 rebounds were the most by a Pioneer since 15 from Alison Janecek back in 2014.
Jacqlyn Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) scored a game-high 18 points in the win. Poss had the shot going, hitting 9-of-17 from the field, including the late floater to tie the game up with 29 seconds left in regulation.
IPFW was led by Kamilah Carter's 14 points.
Both teams kept it close in the opening moments with IPFW taking a two-point lead into the first under-five media timeout at the 4:40 mark. The Mastodons used the 3-point line early, getting two quick made 3s from KeShyra McCarver, who came into the game at 35.6 percent from beyond the arc on the year.
Denver took the lead late, getting a big bucket from Alt. The sophomore forward made a quick move on a drive to the basket and finished with a smooth layup at the rim, putting the Pioneers up 12-11 after one quarter.
In the second, IPFW found separation, taking a seven-point advantage into half after a furious 14-4 run to close out the quarter. DU was held to just eight points in the quarter, going just 3-for-10.
The Mastodons got their first double-digit lead of the afternoon midway through the third after McCarver connected on a 3-pointer to make it 36-25. Denver rallied to get within nine at the end of the quarter with a 6-0 run over the final 2:04.
The Pioneers roared back in the first five minutes of the fourth, going on a 7-0 run that was powered by their defense. DU finally tied it up after Poss drove to the left side of the paint and dropped a floater in off the glass to even the score at 48-48 with 29 seconds left.
Denver then made a last-second stand as IPFW had one last shot with 0.7 left on the clock but couldn't get a good look for the win.
In overtime, the Pioneers' defense delivered when it mattered most, holding the Mastodons to just 1-for-9 shooting in the extra period. Alt put it away for good after ripping down her 17th board despite being fouled hard on the play. The Minnesota native then stepped to the line and connected on the second free throw to put DU up three.
IPFW had one last chance after calling a timeout with six seconds left, but missed it game-tying 3-point attempt by Carter, giving Denver the win.
No Quit In This Team
Despite trailing for 31 minutes on the afternoon, the Pioneers again showed just how resilient they are. They trailed by as many as 15 late in the third, and could've just shut down and fought for another day but this team willed itself on to battle their way back into the game. This should continue to serve DU well as league play rolls on.
