 HOUSTON - The University of Denver women's swimming and diving team earned a victory Saturday morning by a count of 116-88 over Tulane, before falling 119.5-85.5 against Florida International in the afternoon session on Saturday on day two of the Dual-A-Palooza at the Owls' Competition Pool. Hosts Rice were also swimming in the event.
Denver's women combined for six individual event wins on Saturday.
"We had some great racing performances in both sessions today. The team raced hard in the afternoon against FIU and it was great to see some of our depth coming into play," associate head coach Alicia Hicken-Franklin said. "Overall it was a good weekend of racing for us and a good start to our season."
Junior Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo.) won her second, third and fourth individual events of the weekend, to go along with her relay win last night, winning the 200 yard backstroke at 2:00.37, the 100 backstroke in the afternoon session at 55.23 and the 100 yard IM at 57.90, also in the afternoon session.
Senior Johanna Roas (Munich, Germany) won her third event of the weekend (two individual/one relay), touching first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.40.
In the afternoon session, senior Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.) joined her two teammates with her third event win of the weekend, taking first in the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:17.43. Junior Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) took Denver's fourth individual race in the fifth event of the afternoon session, winning the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.63.
In the morning session, Denver's 200 yard medley relay teams finished third and fourth. McCormick, Sanders, freshman Josie Valette (Boudler, Colo.) and Roas were clocked at 1:45.00, over a second ahead of Denver's b-relay that saw Bradley, sophomore All-American Bailey Andison (Smiths Falls, Ontario), freshman Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) and junior Morgan Wice-Roslin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) combined for a time of 1:46.29.
Sophomore Annelyse Tullier (Dallas, Texas) led Denver in the second event, finishing sixth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.19.
Bradley and junior Grace Sommerville (Asburton, New Zealand) finished second and sixth, respectively in the 200 yard butterfly, touching at 2:06.34 and 2:08.30 in the morning session's third event.
Following Roas' and McCormick's victories, Sanders finished second in event six, the 100 yard breaststroke, clocking at 1:04.39. Andison was a few spots behind her teammate, as the time of 1:06.15 was good enough for fifth in the event. Valette (25.97) and Bradley (26.02) led Denver in the 50 yard butterfly, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
McCormick added a third place finish to her morning session in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.09 to lead the Pioneers. In the 400 yard IM, Myers and Andison touched in second and third, clocking in at 4:25.51 and 4:26.44 on Saturday morning. Senior Nicole Cassou (Castle Rock, Colo.) also finished in the top half of the event for the Pioneers, placing sixth at 4:33.17.
Freshman Sydney Brookstein (Broomfield, Colo.) and Sammy Walker (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished fifth and sixth in the one meter dive with scores of 215.75 and 208.60, respectively.
Denver started off the afternoon session with a second place finish in the 100 yard medley relay as Roas, Andison, Bradley and Valette combined for a time of 48.60. Myers led Denver in the second event of the second session, clocking in at 10:14.50 in the 1000 yard freestyle.
Sanders event win came in the third event of the final session, a race Cassou also finished in the top half in, touching the wall sixth at 2:24.86.
Denver clocked in at one and two in the 200 yard butterfly, as Bradley and Sommerville finished 0.03 seconds apart with Bradley touching first at 2:04.63.
Later in the session, Roas and Myers finished fourth and fifth, respectively with times of 1:53.42 and 1:53.42.
Wrapping up Denver's trip to Houston, Denver's 400 yard freestyle relay finished second with a time of 3:27.09, as Valette, Myers, Bradley and Roas combined for the runner-up finish.
Walker (226.80) and Brookstein (201.10) finished fifth and sixth in the three-meter diving during Saturday's afternoon session.
"Overall, the girls were consistent and dove as they have in practice," first year diving coach Ben Grado said. "I saw some good dives over the weekend. There is always room for improvement and I look forward to seeing what the season has in store as this is only the beginning."
