DENVER - Having an abundance of options to choose from on the offensive side of the net, the University of Denver volleyball team had all hands on deck in a thrilling five-set win over IUPUI this evening at 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 19-25 and 15-6.

"What a fantastic high-level match in Hamilton tonight," said head coach Tom Hogan. "It was great for our team to be pushed to five sets this late in the season and come out on top.

Four members of the Pioneers' (18-6, 10-2 SL) offense tallied over 10 kills, led by 14 from local native Nola Basey as she also posted her fourth double-double of the season with 11 digs. Basey now sits four kills away from becoming the 14th member of Denver's 1,000 kills club while merely 48 digs away from joining the 1,000 digs club. She would be the fifth member in DU's history to surpass both totals in a career.

Kayla Principato followed suit with 13 kills and three block assists, while Moni Corrujedo and Emma Willis both added 11 kills coupled with a swing percentage over .300. Corrujedo and Willis also had a hand on the defensive side of the net that kept the Jaguars (11-15, 7-4 SL) to a .151 hitting mark as both posted three blocks while Corrujedo had a heavy hand on the service line with four aces.

Piyusha Boteju was the other Denver player to record a double-double in the match, her fifth of the year, with 23 assists and 11 digs, and had help steering the offense as Monique Domme led with 25 assists. Cassidy Rooke provided the steady hand in the back row as she dug out 22 attacks in the match and added three aces from the service line, while Ruth Okoye led the net presence with five total blocks, one solo and four assisted.

"Our setters ran a very well-balanced offense with four players in double figure kills and Rooke anchored the defense along with her strong serve," said Hogan. "Our attention and focus now turns to the final two weeks of league play where we will battle four tough teams as we compete for a league championship."

Gabby Fisher led all hitters in the match with 19 kills and a .316 swing percentage coupled with 16 digs, followed by Kori Waelbroeck who added 17 kills on a .188 mark. Alexis Mapes, the reigning Offensive Player of the Week in the Summit League, paced the IUPUI attack with 44 assists and helped out the back line with 16 digs.

Set One:

The Pioneers swung at .370 in the opener and used five team blocks to keep the Jaguars to a .000 clip.

Basey and Principato led with three kills each as Principato posted two blocks alongside Okoye, Corrujedo and Willis.

Denver took the first four points of the frame and stayed in control the rest of the way, leading wire-to-wire for the 25-18 final.

Set Two:

DU hit at .158 with one block in the second set, but was outpaced by IUPUI at a .226 mark and three blocks.

Willis took over in the set with five kills and no errors, followed by Basey with four kills and Principato with three.

The Pioneers held another early lead at 4-1 and kept a comfortable cushion at 10-5, but the Jaguars slowly cut into the lead and forced the first tie at 11-11 and kept the run going for an 18-12 lead after rallying for the 13-2 run. Denver got as close as 23-22 and broke the first set point from the Jags at 24-23, but couldn't get past the road block as the visitors took the set at 25-23.

Set Three:

Denver's defense rebounded in the third set, keeping IUPUI to a .030 percentage, and used four service aces and a .156 clip to take a 2-1 lead.

Corrujedo stepped up to the net and fired off five kills, while Basey, Willis and Becca Latham added two apiece.

DU trailed early on at 6-2 but fired off an 8-1 run to grab onto the lead at 10-7. The Jaguars kept some momentum and held the lead at 13-11, but a massive 13-3 Pioneer run put the drive in the home team and cruised to a 25-17 final.

Set Four:

IUPUI's offense was seemingly untouchable in the set, hitting .400 with only two errors, while the Pioneers couldn't match with their .244 mark.

Principato took over the attack, driving home five kills, while Okoye added three alongside Corrujedo's two.

The Jags took the first four points of the set and kept the cushion at 14-10. Denver fought tooth-and-nail to narrow the gap down to 19-16 later on but wouldn't get any closer as IUPUI took the set at 25-19.

Set Five:

DU's offense was perfect in the decisive set, putting away nine kills and no errors for a blistering .500 swing percentage and keeping the Jags at a .000 mark behind two blocks.

Basey led the way with three kills while Principato, Willis and Latham all tallied two.

Denver led wire-to-wire when it mattered, taking three of the first four points and never letting IUPUI tie the set en route to a 15-6 final.
