PIONEERS FALL LATE TO COWGIRLS

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Denver women's basketball team fell in a hard fought battle on the road to the University of Wyoming, 59-49.

DU led a balanced scoring attack, with nine of 11 players scoring, led by senior guard Jacqlyn Poss's nine points. Senior forward Jesse Spittel and redshirt freshman guard Haley Simental each had eight. Junior guard Ciera Morgan led the Pioneers with six rebounds, with redshirt sophomore Jahla Osborne and junior forward Jordyn Alt each adding five.

Wyoming would strike first, before Morgan would take it coast-to-coast for two, tying the game at two a minute into play. Denver would take the lead on a deep three from freshman guard Lauren Loven, at 7-6 with just over three minutes to play in the first. Wyoming would tie the game at 13 going into the second quarter.

A couple of huge defensive plays including a shot clock violation would stop the Cowgirls with eight minutes to play in the second quarter.

Back-to-back triples from Poss and Loven would extend the Pioneer lead to five at 26-21 with 5:33 to play in the half. DU would take a 32-28 lead into the locker room.

On the first half, Denver shot 42.9 percent on 9-of-21 from the floor while collecting 16 rebounds, three blocks and dishing out three assists.

The second half would prove to be a very physical, and the Cowgirls would come out fierce, going on a 6-0 run to start.

They would take a two point lead before an elbow jumper from Simental would tie the game at 34 with 6:20 to play in the third quarter. A jumper from Poss as time would expire would cut the Wyoming lead to five, 41-46 going into the fourth quarter.

Spittel would come up with a huge swat with 8:45 to play in the ball game and would kick it up to Morgan who would hit the floater, cutting the Wyoming lead to three.

Spittel would come up huge for the Pioneers again, as she would take a charge and then convert on the other end of the floor, giving the Pioneers the lead at 47-46 with 5:37 to play. Simental took it hard to the hoop with three minutes to play and drew the foul. She would convert on both and bring the Pioneers within one at 49-50.

The Cowgirls would hit a monster three the very next play, and take a four point lead from which they would never falter.

Wyoming would hit four free throws in the final 36 seconds of play to seal the victory and defeat the Pioneers, 59-49.

The Cowgirls outrebounded the Pioneers 35-27, including grabbing 17 offensive boards. DU shot 40 percent from the floor on the game, going 16-of-40 while UW was 38.6 percent (22-of-57). Denver turned the ball over 19 times, compared to 13 times for Wyoming.

Denver is back in action Tuesday night it plays host to Cal State Fullerton. The game will be played in Magness Arena; tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MT.
