BOX SCORE
DENVER - The University of Denver women's basketball team couldn't overcome a rough-shooting first half on Sunday, losing 67-54 to IUPUI in a physical contest at Magness Arena.
Paige Bradley (The Woodlands, Texas) led the charge on Pink Day for the Pioneers, finishing with a team-high 18 points and six assists. The Texas native also pulled down three rebounds.
Jordyn Alt (North Oaks, Minn.) just missed out on her third double-double of the season, scoring seven points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Jaguars were powered by Mikale Rogers' 19 points and 10 rebounds, giving her two double-doubles against DU this year.
IUPUI opened with a commanding start, running out to a 14-4 advantage within the first eight minutes of the first quarter. The Jaguars got the quick double-digit lead due to their ability to get into the paint and get points right around the rim. The trend continued for the rest of the quarter, with IUPUI holding an 11-point lead at the end of one.
The Jaguars pulled away for good in the second, getting their lead to as large as 19 with 4:10 left in the half. Denver was able to cut the deficit to 14 at the break thanks to a late push by its offense to close out the half.
Shooting played a major role in the first 20 minutes, with the Pioneers going just 7-for-25 (28 percent) from the field while IUPUI knocked down shots at a 50 percent rate (13-for-26).
In the third, DU opened fast, scoring six of the first eight points to force a timeout from the Jaguars. IUPUI, though, responded by taking control for the majority of the quarter with more points in the paint. Denver closed strong, cutting its deficit to 11 at the end of the third after Bradley drained a 3, her second of the afternoon.
The Pioneers tried to close the gap in the fourth, getting within eight after a layup from Bradley at the 1:41 mark. The Jaguars, though, never let them get any closer to that, forcing DU to play the foul game. IUPUI converted its free throws, going on to get the double-digit victory.
On the Road Again
DU heads back out on the road looking to secure a birth in the Summit League Tournament in early March. It will need to keep bringing its defensive pressure that has given numerous opponents trouble throughout the season and find ways to get easy scores on the offensive end.
