Feb. 18, 2016 Day Two Results
Indianapolis, IND - The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving team showed another strong performance today on the second day of competition at the 2016 Summit League Championships. Denver has the overall lead at the end of day two as the men currently lead with 320.5 points and the women are in first place with 395 points.
"We had a great day today start to finish," head coach Brian Schrader said. "I'm really proud and excited for how our athletes attacked both sessions today, and I think fast swimming can be contagious and we just built off of our swims as we went today.
"Our relays got us off to a great start, with setting both school and conference records with those wins. Then our 500 swimmers pushed each other to some fantastic times--Clara Jenck and Maddie Myers both went under the school and summit record for 1st and 2nd place. Dylan Bunch picked up a win and a conference record in the 500 as well."
The women's 200 free relay team of Johanna Roas (Munich, Germany), Morgan Wice-Roslin (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.) and Zoe Huddleston (Rothschild, Wisc.) finished first overall with a time of 1:30.77, setting a new school and Summit League Championship record. The men's relay team of Ray Bornman (Mackay, Queensland), Kyle Robrock (Savage, Minn.), Anton Loncar (Hillsboro, Oreg.) and Tim Cottam (Sydney, Australia) also won their race with a time of 1:18.42, while also setting a new school and Summit League record, and reaching NCAA B Standard time.
The women's team had seven of the top eight finishes in the 500 freestyle event, including: Maddie Myers (4:45.30, first), Clara Jenck (4:46.07, second), Grace Sommerville (4:47.94, third), Morgan Mullenix (4:50.11, fourth), Tyra Rooney (4:51.84, fifth), Karly Haraden (4:54.66, sixth) and Nicole Cassou (4:57.36, seventh). Myers set a new conference and school record, while her and Jenck also qualified for NCAA B Standards with their fast race times. Jenck also finished under the prior record.
The men's squad performed equally as well in their 500 free race, including top-four finishes from Dylan Bunch (Boulder City, Nev.) (4:18.06, first), Scott Bergstrom (4:24.70, second), Luke Williams (4:25.08, third) and Alex Walton (4:57.36, fourth). Bunch's first place time set a new Summit League record and his time, along with Bergstrom's final time qualified for NCAA B Standards.
Bailey Andison (Smith Falls, Ontario) set a new school and Summit League record and reached NCAA B Standards with her first place finish in the women's 200 IM (1:56.81). Roas finished second overall (1:59.01, NCAA B Standard), while Amanda Sanders finished third (1:59.59, NCAA B Standard) and Morgan McCormick placed fourth overall (2:01.03, NCAA B Standard). Roas and Sanders also finished under the prior record.
"Bailey Andison then just rolled her 200 IM-- truly a breakthrough...and the women on our team that helped push her to that performance were also under the previous records, and picked up their own NCAA standards as well," Schrader added. "Our men IMRS went 1-2-3-4 and made their own NCAA B standards."
Cottam's first place finish in the men's 200 IM also qualified for NCAA B Standards, along with Ben Severino's third place finish with a time of 1:48.65. Kyle Ewoldt placed fourth overall with a time of 1:49.15 and Travis Greenwald finished in sixth place (1:50.27).
Wice-Roslin won the women's 50 free event with a time of 22.82 (NCAA D Standard), while teammates Huddleston (23.03, second), Moden (23.13, third) and Heidi Bradley (23.45, sixth) also finished in the top-eight. On the men's side, Robrock set a Summit League and school record with his preliminary race time of 19.53, and he also won the finals with a time of 19.65. Loncar finished fourth in the same race with a time of 20.30 and Patrick Guillory placed seventh overall with a time of 20.83.
"Morgan Wice-Roslin had her own breakthrough, winning her first individual conference title and breaking 23 twice today," Schrader said. "Kyle Robrock broke the oldest conference record in the books today with his win in the 50."
The Denver women's diving team also showed a strong performance in today's meet. Larissa Grammer (Olathe, Colo.) finished 7th overall in the one meter diving event with a final score of 216.35, while teammate Drew Soffer (Chicago, Ill.) finished 13th with a final score of 151.65.
