Feb. 6, 2016 DENVER ââ'¬" The No. 13 University of Denver women's gymnastics team scored a new season high overall with a 196.675 to win over Utah State (195.500) at home on Saturday for Pink Night. Denver also set new season bests as a team on bars, beam and floor, while seven Pioneers set or tied at least one career high during the meet.
Senior Nina McGee (Cincinnati, Ohio) continued her winning streak in the all-around, taking home her fifth straight title with a new season best 39.600-just .025 off her career high. For the second consecutive week, she also won at least a share of all four event titles.
"I thought the team showed tremendous character tonight. The team is in the middle of midterms academically, and we were changing line ups, but everyone stepped up and performed really well," head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "They showed a lot of composure and aggressiveness tonight, and we want to continue building off this performance."
DU opened the meet on vault with a 48.925. Freshman Diana Chesnok (Charlotte, N.C.) matching her career best with a 9.850, tying her with McGee at the top of the event podium. Junior Julia Ross (Henderson, Nev.) finished just out of the top three with her 9.775 for fourth place.
For the second rotation, Denver moved to bars and tallied a season-best 49.300-two tenths better than their previous high. McGee led the meet in scoring with a 9.925, which matches her career best. Chesnok finished second with a 9.875-also a career high-while freshman Claire Kern (Charlotte, N.C.) and Ross finished the event sweep for DU with matching 9.850s. Kern's bars score was a new personal best.
Moving to beam for the third rotation, the Pioneers again set a season high team total of 49.125, as well as two personal bests. Sophomore Claire Hammen (Loveland, Colo.) scored a career-best 9.875 to tie with McGee atop the event standings. Freshman Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) had DU's second-highest mark with a 9.825, which set a new personal best as well. Ross, too, scored 9.825.
Denver closed the meet on floor with yet another season-high, a 49.325, highlighted by McGee's 9.950. Schou and sophomore Nikole Addison (Fort Myers, Fla.) both scored 9.875-a new career high for Schou and matching Addison's best career mark on the event. Senior Emily Barrett (Norman, Okla.) also added a personal best with her 9.825.
"I'm really pleased with some of the accomplishments tonight, from Nina's consistency in the all-around to not having a fall on any event," Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We always enjoy watching what happens in practice pay off in competition."
Denver is on the road for the next two weeks, first traveling to Oklahoma City for the Perfect 10 Challenge against Oklahoma, George Washington and Utah State on February 12. DU then visits Penn State with Alabama and Cornell on February 20 before returning home on February 27 when the Pioneers will host Iowa, SE Missouri and Illinois-Chicago.
