San Jose, Calif. - The 34th-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team defeated No. 73 San Jose State 4-3 today at Spartan Courts in San Jose, Calif. The Pioneers improved their record to 12-2 overall.
"We had to dig deep today in a few singles matches," head coach Christian Thompson said. "San Jose State was very disciplined in most positions and as a whole they fought from start to finish. We are looking forward to the match on Saturday against Santa Clara."
Bianca Mok (Boise, Idaho), Maureen Slattery (Newport, Va.) and Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) each picked up singles victories in today's match to help claim the victory for the Pioneers.
The pair of Julia O'Loughlin (Highland Beach, Fla.) and Slattery won their doubles match 6-2, while the duo of Mok/Morgan Barnhill (Austin, Texas) were also victorious in doubles play, defeating Sybille Gauvain and Marine Dans of San Jose State 6-0.
"This was a huge match for us against a very well coached and super talented San Jose State team," assistant coach David Loewenthal said after the match. "We were very fortunate to play well in doubles today, and get a big 1-0 lead going into what turned out to be an absolute battle in singles. It was great to see our co-captains, Maureen and senior Charlotte step up in a big way today winning in tough straight sets. But, massive credit must go to Bianca again pulling through a very high-pressure deciding match with an incredible level of play and ice in her veins."
The team will now travel to Santa Clara, Calif. to take on the University of Santa Clara on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. MT.
