March 4, 2016 DENVER - The No. 13 University of Denver women's gymnastics team celebrated Senior Night by posting the team's second-highest team score of the season on Friday, a 196.825 to top No. 19 Minnesota (196.175) and Air Force (191.175).
Senior Nina McGee (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished her career in Denver with her third career perfect 10.0 on floor--and her second in two straight meets. She also won the all-around title with a 39.575, as well as the individual titles on vault and bars.
"I'm so so proud of the seniors and this team," said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. "They're competing with confidence and consistency. It was a complete team effort on every event and in every routine, and everyone knows their role. We had to block out a lot of distracting factors tonight, and that shows our mental and physical toughness."
Speaking about McGee's performance, Kutcher-Rinehart added: "Of course, it was exciting to have Nina once again score a perfect 10, especially on Senior Night."
Denver opened the meet on vault, tallying a 49.200 for the third time this season, tying the best team total in 2016. McGee led the meet in scoring with a 9.925, and junior Julia Ross (Henderson, Nev.) tied for third overall with a season-high 9.850. Sophomore Nikole Addison (Fort Myers, Fla.) tied her career high with a 9.825.
On bars for the second rotation, DU scored a 49.250 led by McGee's event-winning 9.925, which matched her personal best. Ross scored her first 9.900 on bars to tie for second overall, and Addison tied her career high with a 9.850. Freshman Diana Chesnok (Charlotte, N.C.) added a 9.800 to give DU four scores of 9.800 or higher.
The Pioneers moved to beam for the third rotation and scored a 48.975 overall. Ross led the Pioneers with her 9.900 to claim the event title. Senior Emily Barrett (Norman, Okla.) had DU's second-highest score with a 9.800 while fellow senior Katie Menhinick (Paramus, N.J.) and freshman Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) added 9.775s.
DU finished the meet with McGee's second-straight perfect 10.0 on floor in her final meet on the DU campus. All of Denver's floor routines were 9.800 or higher, including a career-tying 9.875 from Addison to tie for third overall and second on the team. Menhinick and Schou each scored 9.850 while sophomore Claire Hammen (Loveland, Colo.) added a 9.825 and Barrett a 9.800.
"I want to give a special thank you to the fans, friends and supporters of DU gymnastics for all their support this season and for having another packed night," Kutcher-Rinehart said. "It was a great way to send our senior class out and gave us a loud, exciting environment tonight."
DU, Minnesota and Air Force will compete again this weekend, this time traveling to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on Sunday at 1 p.m.
