DENVER - The 48th-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team beat the No. 59 University of Pennsylvania 6-1 today in their second outdoor match of the weekend at Stapleton Pavilions.
The Pioneers went a perfect 6-0 in singles matches and 2-1 in doubles play.
"We did a great job in the singles matches," head coach Ricardo Rubio said. "We won five of the six first sets. I thought the doubles point again was big. It looked like we were going to get it and then we didn't get it, so we responded pretty well. Overall, a very good weekend. I'm very pleased with the guys and very happy for the guys. Now we have a chance to rest our bodies and get ready for final exams and get ready to play in San Diego a couple of weeks from now."
Denver earned singles victories from Henry Craig (Murietta, Calif.), David Fox (Surrey, United Kingdom), Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) and Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada), Jesse Ruder-Hook (Denver, Colo.) and Zach Fryer (Centennial, Colo.).
The Pioneers received their lone doubles match victory from the duo of Ruder-Hook/James.
Denver will have a few weeks off before traveling to San Diego, Calif. to compete in the San Diego Invitational from March 17-19.
